Thesis Prize Workgroup Seventeenth Century 2020 for Weixuan Li

Weixuan Li has won the 2020 thesis prize of the Werkgroep Seventeenth Century with her rMA thesis Deciphering the art and market in the Dutch Golden Age: insights from digital methodologies (2018), written at the UvA degree program Arts of the Netherlands. The prize was awarded during the digital annual meeting on 28 August 2020. The jury chose her thesis as the best of 8 submissions and in its report praised, in addition to the analysis of the painting production and the link to the genre problem, the innovative network analysis based on iconographic criteria. from Icon Class. The thesis was supervised by Marten Jan Bok and Claartje Rasterhoff. Weixuan is currently appointed as a PhD candidate in the NWO research project Virtual Interiors as Interfaces for Big Historical Data Research. She conducts research into “deep mapping” of artists in Amsterdam in the 17th century, in order to analyze the relationships between location and innovation. She is also building (with the research team) the “Künstler-Inventare” database, which analyzes the interiors of houses and studios of Amsterdam artists and art dealers.
