Lex Heerma van Voss studied History at Utrecht University and at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris. He obtained his doctorate cum laude in Utrecht with a thesis on the consequences of the introduction of the eight-hour working day in the Netherlands. From 1994 to 2011, he worked as a senior researcher at the International Institute of Social History. In 2010-11, he was also the scientific director of Instituut Gak. From 2000-2021 he was an extraordinary professor at Utrecht University, initially in the history of labour and labour relations, since 1 July 2014 in the history of social security. In 2011-12 he led the Political and Institutional History group at Huygens ING. From 2012 until 2021 he was director of Huygens ING. Since his retirement in 2021, he is a Research Fellow at IISH.
